For 90 years and 4 Generations, the Phillips Family has been trucking Steel up and down Lake Pochung Road, in Vernon, NJ. From its humble beginnings in 1934, Reginald Stewart Phillips purchased an old Apple Orchard as a place to lay down the excess materials from his greenhouse business. In the 1960s, Amos and Julia Phillips purchased the business and moved away from greenhouses to focus more on surplus steel after tearing down NJ Zinc in Ogdensburg NJ. In 1980, Brothers Reginald and Steven Phillips purchased the business and continued to grow the steel service center. With just 3 employees they continued to add additional product lines and services as demand in Sussex County and the surrounding area grew. With this growth, they added additional staff to continue to meet growing demands. As the steel warehouse industry grew, so did the need to grow the fabrication and erection division of the company.
In 2004 Twin Brothers Scott and Neil Phillps continued the family tradition and joined the company on a full-time basis. In 2009, long-term employee Joseph Thomas Jr. became a Partner to continue the company growth toward larger fabrication and installation projects. Then In 2011, Brothers Scott and Neil purchased the business securing the 4th generation of R.S. Phillips Steel LLC. Through innovation and determination, they continued to modernize the company to remain competitive, while keeping a high quality of service. With 20 employees and an economic recession, the Phillips family continued to survive with long-term employees Steve Ahearn, Todd Benson, and Klaus Hickey displaying their commitment to the company and community. 13 years later and 90 years at the same location, the company has grown to 30 employees, offering a one-stop shop for all your steel needs. We Warehouse, Fabricate, and Erect Structural Steel all out of one location.
In addition to being the only Steel Service Center in Sussex County, we are one of the largest fabricators in the area, working on projects that are shipped to different parts of the country and service a variety of industries.
In addition to our success in the industry, we are proud of what we are able to do for our local community. We proudly support our local Chamber of Commerce as members of Sussex County and Vernon Chambers for over 25 years. In addition, we actively support fire, EMS, Police departments, numerous local sports programs, Local Veterans programs, VTHS Robotics program, and Special Olympics New Jersey, in which we have been an integral part of the Special Olympics Winter Games for over 10 years. In addition, we have partnered with Sussex County Community College Welding Program to provide an internship for Welding Students for the last 10 semesters. This program has given us the opportunity to teach and train students in the industry. The Intern Program has been very successful, and we have even hired 4 students into full-time positions!
